The founder and Chancellor of the proposed STARS University (Sports, Technology, Arts and Research Science University), Idumuje Ugboko, Delta State. Hon. Dr. Prince Ned Nwoko, Saturday, 27th April, 2019, hinted that the university will partner with the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, FUPRE, to provide quality university education with requisite knowledge to drive development and economy of the country to accelerated level. The international legal luminary and senator elect for Delta north, dropped the hint while addressing the university community on the occasion of the award of honorary doctor of science degree to him by the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun. On this vexed national issue, the visionary Prince shared the opinion that academic and research collaborations are very valuable tool that not only accelerates the progress, economic growth and development of a country, but also enhances the quality of education offered by the institutions to the citizens of the country.

His words, “academic collaboration is beneficial to universities in learning new teaching tools, exchange of ideas, collaboration in research works and enthronement of a lasting sports culture within their various campuses and the country at large.” He further added, “all these add up, will increase the breadth and knowledge of students in learning different approaches to solving their individual problems and contributing their quoter towards meeting national challenges.

“This tool is being increasingly utilised with success in developed countries. Good examples where such partnerships are been implemented are the the Ivy League universities in the United States of America, the Oxbridge and the Golden Triangle universities in the United Kingdom, the C9 League universities in China, the Group of Eight universities in Australia, and the Imperial Universities in Japan. These universities have evolved strong culture through partnership in many areas which have helped to placed them top among the best universities in the world and also placed their countries at high pedestal in technological advancement, economic and sports development.” Prince Ned Nwoko, emphasized.

He went on to say, “under the prevailing conditions of paucity of funds in the Nigerian universities,  university authorities must have a well-planned partnership and collaborative approach in a manner that will enable them put available resources into maximum use.””Partnership and collaboration must be embraced, emphasised, encouraged and brought to a level where it can impact and improve the quality, resources and capabilities of Nigerian institutions to undertake research to find solutions to the numerous challenges facing the country.” He advised.

In conclusion, Prince Ned Nwoko said, “an academic culture that fosters partnerships and cooperation instead of individualism must be embraced to improve quality of education offers as well as accelerate progress and development of the country”.

The above quote, summarised the views of our visionary Prince on this burning national issue. That is why he is needed at the Senate, to give the Red Chamber sense of direction and initiate great ideas that will help the country out of her perennial socioeconomic predicaments.

Prince Ned Nwoko giving his acceptance speech at FUPRE, Delta State Nigeria

The Vice Chancellor, management , staff and  students of FUPRE, fellow award recipients  ,it is an amazing moment in this outstanding University.
On behalf of  my  co – recipients , I stand on the front row of history to accept this prestigious  honour .

This is a life  – long privilege given the lofty essence of University.
The idea of the University  is not just the treasure of learning and knowledge. It confers  the finest toga of human prestige, dignity and self assurance.
To be recognized  by the University is a badge of honour, seal of approval, power of confidence, acclamation of competence and celebration of social distinction.
Coming from the  Federal University of petroluem  resources, the first of  its kind in Africa’s most populous nation, one can only bask in amazing glory.
On the realm of self introspection, this award holds so much fascination to me.
First of all, let me say that I am enamoured with education.I  love education. So deeply.

My attachment is not by coincidence. It is driven by studied  orientation and  exposure. In the prime of youth , I travelled to London , England to behold a whole new world that would change my destiny forever. I returned from Britain to my fatherland in 1999 with the best of Western education culminating in a fulfilling legal  career. I am truly happy and humbled to be Learned . I was elected member  House  of Representatives  Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency  between 1999-2003.

I qualified and practiced law in the best Environment known to mankind in terms of a society entrenched in democracy and rule of law and order. Where everything seems to work so perfectly.

My most cherished passion has always been human capital development through education.  My core value is education driven by service and integrity. For decades , I have provided educational succour to thousands of students in secondary and tertiary institutions, deploying my God -given resources to ensure scholarships and grants , targeting both the brilliant and the indigent students as well as the vulnerable ones in Delta and other parts of Nigeria.

The crowning glory of my love for educational attainment is  the proposed  Science, Technology, Arts and  Sports University ( STARS UNIVERSITY ,  located in my home town of Idumuje Ugboko, near  Asaba the Delta state capital.

The STARS UNIVERSITY expected to begin academic activities in the next few  months  has a unique place as the first sports University in sub Saharan Africa. It also comes with the full compliments of a conventional University as it is poised to offer regular academic programmes.

Education is the master key to self actualization.
To the young graduands at this auspicious convocation ceremony, take a deep breath. My dream is for you to excel as you embrace the world with strength defined by character and learning.
I have a word for you. Maximize your potentials, check  your attitudes and believe in yourself.

Remember that attitude is everything in life.
Relax  and listen carefully to these inspirational insights of living by American educator ,Charles Rozell Swindoll
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.  Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company…. a home.  The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes”

The moral lesson here is that you must choose your  attitudes wisely.
As you graduate out of school you are most  likely to face the world with all it’s vulgarities .
Nigeria  may not catch your fancy anymore because of her enormous social, economic and political challenges.  But as you rue over the parlous state of affairs and ponder over a seemingly uncertain future look up yourself in the mirror and say – Yes I can overcome. Do good, act against evil. Say no to crime , violence and self immolation.

Embrace the future with a positive mental and physical attitude .
Go and make a mark. With your good education ,you have the latitude to effect a positive change in the society and impact  your lives, your families, your generation.

As you join me and fellow awardees to savour the moment of this glorious event,  I wish everyone a bright, colourful and progressive  future.
Thank you all.
